Because you care, you can improve Miriam’s wellbeing

Miriam is a person we support at our day opportunities service, Grove Resource Centre in Surrey. She has complex needs and has spent most of her life in a wheelchair. When she first joined Voyage Care in 2019, she was shy, anxious and wouldn’t eat. The team at the service worked with her to reduce her anxiety by slowly introducing weekly wellbeing sessions.

The Grove Resource Centre is a day service supporting people with learning disabilities and complex needs. It’s an opportunity for the people we support to get out of the house, learn new skills, engage in the local community and gain a new-found independence.

Devy, our Wellbeing Facilitator, helps Miriam and other people we support to feel relaxed and calm. Some of the techniques Devy uses include massages and meditation. As Miriam’s anxiety began to pass, due to the staffs’ focus on her wellbeing, she started to talk more about her goals. She opened up and told staff about the things she enjoys, including her love for cooking.

Working with her support workers, Miriam is now a trainee chef and helps prepare meals for up to 50 people! She loves being able to express her passion for cooking.

Now, Miriam is confident and vocal about what she enjoys and what she wants to do. This is a stark difference from when she first transitioned to Voyage Care. This is all thanks to her supportive team, who worked with Miriam and were patient with her to strive for a better-quality life. She even has her support workers wrapped around her little finger and always has them in fits of giggles!
