John’s proud, passionate career

John’s journey with the Voyage Care family is a powerful example of what can happen when passion meets opportunity. Since 2018, he’s grown from a dedicated Support Worker into a confident and compassionate Service Manager.

John first joined us because he believed in the work we do and our core purpose: to create fulfilling lives for all. Joining us at Tate Lodge, one of our specialist support homes in Liverpool, he played an important role in delivering specialist support to people with acquired brain injuries and complex behavioural needs. From his first day, this felt meaningful to him, and he knew this was where he wanted to build his career.

Working in one of our specialist homes quickly showed John how different each day can be and the challenges that can arise. Many of the people we support have complex backgrounds and present different behaviours. With a deep passion and a supportive team, John navigated these challenges with ease and found purpose in the variety and complexity of the role. This is where he formed his love for adult social care and made some life-changing decisions about his future.

The path to progression

As soon as John joined us, he knew he wanted to develop in his role and progress his career. With his love for being busy, and mind set on progression, he quickly started working towards the next step in his career.

Taking on a role as Deputy Manager, he soon stepped up again when there was an opportunity to fill in for the Service Manager. Taking on more responsibilities, this gave John the opportunity to gain managerial experience and understand the skills and responsibility needed for the role. It was hard work, but John stayed true to himself and the people we support and grew from the experience. Learning and understanding what the role entailed, he was now more certain than ever this was what he wanted to work towards.

Being driven to progress and enjoying his work, we supported John to enrol on a Level 5 Leadership and Management course that would deepen the managerial skills he was already developing. Training alongside his daily duties meant he was able to put into practice what he learnt. A combination of determination, industry-leading education and support from his wider team helped John successfully complete his qualification.

John’s hard work and dedication to continuous development paid off when he received a promotion and became our Service Manager at Tate Lodge! At first, John didn’t recognise his own abilities and what he’d achieved since joining us. But after all the love and support from his team and the people we support, he soon saw the impact he made every day. He was also reminded exactly why he applied for the role in the first place, how much it meant to him, and the ambition he held in his heart.

Empowered by those around him, John approached his new role with confidence and reassurance. Through hard work and unwavering devotion, he progressed to the role he aspired to, ready to continue changing the lives of the people we support.

A future with purpose

When John began his social care career, he set goals for his progression pathway. Every step of the way, he remained faithful to those ambitions. He was also consistently committed to the people we support and our organisational purpose.

John’s proud of the progress he’s made, the experience he’s gained, and the impact he’s had. He’s built strong relationships with the people we support, their families and his team. Each role he stepped into along his progression pathway shaped the leader he is today.

Now, as an amazing Service Manager, John focuses on making sure he nurtures a well-supported team and the people we support are held at the heart of their care. His journey is a reminder that careers in care aren’t just about progression, they’re about growth, impact, and shaping lives.
