How Rachel climbed the Voyage Care career ladder!
Rachel is a Regional Support Manager, working across the country with our brain injury rehabilitation team! Joining us in 2015, she started out as a Support Worker in our Voyage Specialist Healthcare team.
From the get-go, Rachel has always been ambitious. After experiencing trauma in her personal life, she found herself caring for a close family member. This was a turning point for Rachel in many ways. She found the value in supporting other people and set out on a quest to establish her career in care.
Rachel’s first step
Before starting her career in care, Rachel worked as an administrator, but she was unfortunately made redundant. She was unsure what she wanted to do next and while she considered transitioning into care, she still wasn’t sure whether this was the right move for her.
But when tragedy struck, and Rachel’s mum became poorly, she found a fresh source of inspiration. Rachel made a courageous decision to make a positive career change and enter the amazing world of social care! She applied for a role at Voyage Care and joined our dedicated Specialist Healthcare team as a Support Worker.
Climbing the ladder!
Fuelled by a passion for helping others, Rachel quickly started to climb the career ladder! Rachel progressed from a Support Worker to Senior Support worker, then Team Leader until progressing to Field Support Supervisor within our Voyage Specialist Healthcare team.
Always seeking new challenges, Rachel then made a brave move and applied for a position within our specialist brain injury rehabilitation team in 2023, eager to progress her skills and share her knowledge. After a smooth transition, she began pouring her passion for care into all things brain injury.
A new challenge
Driven by the experience she gained looking after her mum and the previous roles she’d had in care, Rachel hit the ground running as Regional Support Manager, but quickly realised how different this was to her previous care experience.
Brain injuries happen suddenly and can affect anyone. For our brain injury team, supporting people to reclaim their lives and their independence is the ultimate goal and Rachel quickly got to work.
As a Regional Support Manager, Rachel visits services to offer additional support, helping to consolidate action plans, provide training and even assisting services to develop person-centred care plans that promote positive outcomes! With Rachel’s guiding hand, our teams empower people with brain injuries to achieve goals they never dreamt possible.
From small steps like making a drink, to bigger ones, like getting out and about in the community, whether it’s a big or small win, it’s one step closer to people regaining control of their lives. Rachel sees special moments like these happen daily and thrives on playing a key role in making these moments happen!
Her job is varied, and no two days are the same – that’s why she loves it! Rachel said, “Seeing people achieve their goals is utterly rewarding! I love seeing the people we support rehabilitate, and reintegrate within the community and, for some, seeing them move back to their family homes is so heart-warming!”
Support and training from Voyage Care
From the moment she started with us, Rachel has been learning. Through expertly created e-learning courses, she deepened her knowledge of the social care sector. Then, when she was ready to start supporting people, she spent several days shadowing other Support Workers, gaining valuable insights through practical experience.
Rachel said, “Being there and completing hands on training was the most beneficial for me, it has helped me progress to where I am today!”
As she progressed, Rachel was empowered to enrol on leadership courses and attend conferences, helping her excel in her role and gain the knowledge and insights she needed to be successful.
Since joining Voyage Care, Rachel has rediscovered herself through the skills she’s learnt in all her roles. As part of our specialist brain injury team, Rachel’s also found a close-knit work family. Advocates of teamwork and supporting each other, the brain injury team empower Rachel to freely seek support when she needs it and to keep remaining positive, even on the tough days.
Rachel said, “Roles in the social care sector come with challenges, but having a kind and compassionate team on hand to talk to through the tough times makes all the difference and I can’t thank them enough!”.
